Scotland’s Finest Golf Courses
Scotland is home to a number of fine golf courses which are widely considered as some of the best places to play golf in the world. Below are only five of many spectacular golf courses in Scotland to enjoy the game.
-
Old Course at St Andrews, St Andrews, Fife. Also known as the birthplace of golf, the Old Course at St Andrews is thought to be the world’s oldest golf course. It dates back to the mid-16th century, while some sources claim that the game was played here as early as the 15th century. The ancient links course is run by the St Andrews Links Trust and is a public golf course which means that it’s open to everyone. Getting a tee time, however, is not exactly easy.
-
Muirfield, Gullane, East Lothian. Unlike the Old Course at St Andrews, Muirfield is a private golf links. Known as one of the rotation hosts of The Open Championship, the links is operated by The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers, one of the oldest if not the oldest golf club in the planet. But despite the fact that it’s a private links, non-members can enjoy playing golf at Muirfield as well. For more information on tee times and booking, please contact the Golf Club.
-
Carnoustie Golf Links (Championship Course), Carnoustie, Angus. This is another rotation host of The Open Championship with a history dating back to the 16th century. The design of the Carnoustie Golf Links is the work of Allan Robertson (1815-1859) and Old Tom Morris (1821-1908) but in the 1920s, Robertson’s and Morris’ course was modified by James Braid (1870-1950). To book a tee time at the Championship Course or other two golf courses, please visit the official website of the Carnoustie Golf Links.
-
Royal Troon Golf Club (Old Course), Troon, South Ayrshire. This course hosted a number of prestigious golf tournaments including The Open Championship, Senior British Open and The Amateur Championship, to mention just a few. It’s a private golf course but tee times are available to the public as well. For details on booking and other information, please visit the Golf Club’s website.
-
Royal Dornoch Golf Club (Championship Course), Dornoch, Sutherland. Another Scottish course with a world-wide reputation for breathtaking scenery and top class greens, the Royal Dornoch’s Championship Course may not hosted as many and as prestigious tournaments as the courses mentioned above. But it is consistently ranked among the finest golf courses not only in Scotland but the entire world. The Royal Dornoch is a private golf club but visitors are welcome as well.
